This week on Beat Cares, I had the chance to sit down with Erica Harris from the Child Advocacy Center in Springfield — and wow, what an inspiring conversation.
The Child Advocacy Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary, providing a safe, supportive space for children who have experienced abuse. Instead of repeating their story to multiple agencies, kids can meet with trained staff, forensic interviewers, and medical professionals in a single, welcoming environment — giving them a chance to start healing while minimizing further trauma.
Erica shared how much thought goes into making children feel comfortable, from kid-friendly murals to staff trained to listen without judgment. Even Java, their facility dog, helps kids relax during tough conversations. She also stressed the importance of listening, observing, and reporting: if something feels off, adults should always reach out to the proper channels — because sometimes, speaking up can make all the difference in a child’s life.
Demand for services is growing, and space is a big challenge. That’s why the CAC has purchased a new building, doubling interview pods, adding mental health services, and expanding community training opportunities — but they need our support to make it happen. You can learn more, donate, or volunteer by visiting childadvocacycenter.org.
They also have an upcoming event September 6th, the CAC’s Burgers & Cheers fundraiser is extra special — it’s celebrating 30 years of making a difference! Good food, great drinks, and a fun, casual vibe all come together to support kids in our community. For tickets and more info, CLICK HERE.
