The Springfield Fire Department is urging renters and homeowners to make sure they have the proper amount of smoke detectors in their living space.

This year there has been nine significant fires in the Springfield metro. Five of those fires had injuries with four fires resulting in deaths.

Fire Department officials indicate that some of the fire destruction could have been prevented if there had been adequate smoke alarms in the home.

Officials say main living areas, hallways, kitchens,bedrooms and bathrooms are hot spots for smoke alarm locations.
