It’s that time of year….. APPLE CIDER!
Apple Cider can post health risks to you and your family if its not pasteurized. Health officials say many local orchards will serve apple cider straight from the orchard and its usually unfiltered and unpasteurized.
Health officials are reminding us that unpasteurized cider can come with some serious health risks. Especially for babies, younger kids, pregnant women, older people and those who are immunocompromised. If you fall into one of these categories, drinking unpasteurized apple cider could cause more harm than seasonal joy.
To stay safe make sure to check if your cider has been pasteurized. The law does require packaged products to carry a warning label if they haven’t been treated for safety.
The FDA has received reports of food poisoning linked to untreated juices, prompting the agency to publish a guide on juice safety. It claims that pasteurization (or an alternative treatment) is key to eliminating dangerous bacteria that could be lurking in fresh juices.
Your best bet is that if you are getting cider from an orchard or farmers market, please ask them whether their juice has been pasteurized or unpasteurized.
