With all the rain that we’ve gotten in the last couple of months, it’s no wonder that mosquitos can be brutal!   The BIG question is, how do you avoid them?  How do you NOT get bitten?

Top Tips to Avoid Mosquito Bites

  1. Use Effective Repellents

  • DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus are proven effective.

  • Reapply as directed, especially after swimming or sweating.

  2. Cover Up

  • Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

  • Avoid dark colors and floral prints—they attract mosquitoes.

  3. Avoid Peak Hours

  • Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk.

  • If you’re outside at those times, use repellent and wear protective clothing.

  4. Eliminate Standing Water

  • Empty containers, buckets, plant saucers, and clogged gutters.

  • Change birdbaths and pet bowls regularly—every 2–3 days.

  5. Use Physical Barriers

  • Install or repair window and door screens.

  • Sleep under a mosquito net if needed, especially when camping or traveling.

  6. Try Natural Deterrents (for mild use)

  • Citronella candles, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, or basil can help, but they’re not substitutes for repellent.

  7. Use Fans Outdoors

  • Mosquitoes are weak flyers—a strong fan on your patio or deck can keep them away.

 8. Wear Insect-Repellent Clothing

  • Some clothes are treated with permethrin, which repels mosquitoes.

  • You can also spray your clothing (not skin) with permethrin products.
