Springfield Public Schools  will be cutting back on several positions across the district.

Recently a letter was sent to Springfield Public School employees:

Dear Team SPS:

Approximately one year ago, we communicated that SPS would face budget reductions in the coming years due to anticipated funding cuts. Prior to approving the current operating budget, roughly $15 million in expenditures were cut. Over the next two budget years, it is projected that an additional reduction of $15 million will be necessary.

In preparation for the 2025-2026 budget development process, leaders have begun reviewing expenditures and staffing needs to identify potential savings of at least $7.5 million.

Some savings will be gained by reducing costs related to purchased services, supplies, maintenance, etc. However, roughly 80 percent of the district’s operating budget is allocated to employee salary and benefits. Achieving the savings necessary will require reducing positions. While partial savings may be achieved through attrition as employees retire or resign, it is necessary to eliminate some positions at all levels, including administration, departments and schools.

To assist with budget planning, SPS encourages any employee who knows they will not be returning to work for SPS in 2025-2026 to notify Human Resources as soon as possible. This will help with placing staff who are impacted by budget reductions in other positions as appropriate.

A $1,500 one-time incentive for early notification of separation is available to eligible employees who submit notice by Nov. 30, 2024. Review all eligibility requirements for this incentive here. Employees who do not meet these eligibility requirements may still be eligible for one of the other early notification incentives.

As work on developing the 2025-2026 budget continues, additional updates will be provided. If you have questions, please reach out to your supervisor.

We appreciate you and understand that this is a difficult process, although necessary.

Thank you for your understanding, continued dedication and support.
