Starting Wednesday, May 7, 2025, anyone over the age of 18 is required to have a REAL ID to board a plane when flying domestically in the U.S.

The Real I.D. is also necessary to enter power plants and accessing federal buildings.

The Real ID Act passed in 2005, which was established after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

If you are uncertain on whether your ID is a REAL I.D., look on the top right hand corner of your license. You should see a gold star. A non-compliant license will state   “Not for REAL ID purposes” in the same corner.

Here is what you need to obtain that REAL I.D. from the DMV..

In order to obtain a Real ID, you must visit a Missouri DMV office certain documents in each category:

  • Identity and lawful status
    • Valid passport, birth certificate, certificate of naturalization or citizenship, etc.
  • Social Security number
    • Social Security Card, W-2 form, pay stub with SSN, etc.
  • Proof of residence
    • Utility bill, government documents, financial checks, etc.
  • Name change (if applicable)
    • Marriage or divorce license, adoption papers, etc.

Missouri is one of a few states that does not require every resident to get a Real ID. A non-compliant license will still allow you to drive, vote or register to vote, use for state purposes and age verification. So if you do not plan to fly, enter federal buildings or a nuclear power plant, you may not need one.

If you’ve not updated your driver’s license yet, you can still use these documents when flying: U.S. passport; transportation worker identification credential; defense ID; Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC); permanent resident card; photo ID from a federally recognized Tribe; foreign government-issued passport;
