Wash those hands!  A highly infectious bacteria called Shigella is being spread around Greene County.

Shigella is a bacteria intestinal infection which can cause a person to become very sick.

How do you get it?  It can be transmitted through an infected person also when exposed to non-treated water from lakes and streams or while handling animals.

Symptoms are more severe than the stomach flu.  Expect stomach cramping, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever if you have been exposed to the bacteria. The number of cases of Shigella has increased in recent weeks.

Authorities indicate that the best way to avoid Shigella is to wash your hands often.

If you do get Shigella, the good news is, it’s a fast moving infection and most healthy people will feel better within 5-7 days.
