National Good Neighbor Day

Acts of neighborliness are often simple gestures that help us be a good neighbor, lift up others, or make our community a place we love.

You’re invited to take part in the 1,000 Acts of Neighborliness Challenge for one week — from September 26 to October 2 – as a way to celebrate National Good Neighbor Day on Sept. 28.

The goal is for Greene County residents to achieve 1,000 acts of kindness toward neighbors living near them.

Tell what acts you or your family did during the week, if you witnessed an act of neighboring kindness, or if you were the recipient of a kind act. If it’s something visual, take a photo and send it via email at greeneco@missouri.edu(opens in new window).

Share about these acts of neighborliness and get entered in the contest and drawings by completing a survey online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NationalGoodNeighborDay(opens in new window).

Top Neighbor Awards
Awards for the best example of neighboring in these communities receive a check for $100 to $250.

Tarantula’s Are Migrating!

Tarantula’s are on the move, yes, here in Missouri! Rocky terrain, thick underbrush and forests are perfect habitat for the big 8 legged creatures. Though they aren’t that common to see, we still have them. Many tarantula siting’s have been found close to Tablerock Lake.

Be glad we don’t live in Colorado because the great tarantula migration is underway. During the spiders’ annual mating season, thousands of the hairy, brown creatures can be found scurrying across the rocky surface of La Junta, Colorado, located about three hours south of Denver. What are those tarantulas on the hunt for? Mates, of course!

Tarantula fact- most tarantula’s are docile creatures.

Boom!

Many of you probably rushed outside to find out what on earth rattled your core earlier today. Well, if you didn’t know by out it was in fact a sonic boom.

The Greene County Emergency Management Office confirmed a sonic boom happened around 11:40 a.m. from a Boeing test flight. Many say they felt it from Springfield and beyond, including the Branson area. Several reported the boom rattled pictures and windows.

The military and Boeing have acknowledged the testing of a new jet, the F-15EX Strike Eagle. The aircraft can easily break the sound barrier. Boeing has confirmed several test flights in the last few months.

At times, a sonic boom can be heard from hundreds of miles away.

Deer Tested for COVID-19 by MDOC

The Missouri Department of Conservation will be testing hundreds of deer for the COVID-19 this hunting season.

The U.S Department of Agriculture reported the results of a federal study testing white-tailed deer in Illinois, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. The samples showed at least 7% of the population has antibodies for the virus that causes COVID-19. The highest population showed a massive 67% in Michigan. The USDA report shows that although deer were carrying the antibodies, none of them actually fell ill.

There is not any evidence of deer dying from coronavirus or humans contracting it from eating venison.
