Fall Whites, Hybrids, and More!

The closer we get to winter, the more active the white bass and hybrids get. The shorter days and falling water temps signal to the lakes predators it's time to feed up! It's the perfect time to get out for some fast action. You really never know what you might catch. Those game fish will follow the shad wherever the wind may take them so on any cast it may be a white bass, hybrid, crappie, walleye, or a largemouth that hits your lure.

Look for the banks where the wind is pushing in on. The better banks will be the ones closer to deeper water. A point, a channel swing, or a small cove with the wind blowing in will likely have white bass chasing shad using the bank to help corral their prey. Also, keep an eye out for gulls. In the back of a creek or a cove with gulls diving into the water means there are plenty of shad schools in the area. As the water cools below 60 degrees means there will be less surfacing action but just because you don't see the fish bustin' doesn't mean whites and hybrids aren't around. When you're tossing baits with light line catching 1lb or so whites and then a hybrid hits, better make sure that drag is loose, and be prepared for a long fight! That's exactly what happened to me on Saturday!

Your bait selection is pretty simple too.  Any shad type crankbait will work. I prefer a #5 Rapala Shad Rap. It's almost exactly the same size as the shad the fish are chasing and fools them most of the time. A Berkley Flicker Shad works well too. It's better in stained water where the rattle helps the fish find the bait. You'll want to always have a Rattle-Trap tied on too.

Try and get out in the next few weeks before the water drops below 50 degrees and the active fishing slows. The good news is that about the time the white bass fishing tapers off, the winter crappie fishing starts getting good! Find out more about fall and winter crappie fishing on my Ozarks Outdoors podcast! We'll see you on the water!

Texas Country's Working Man's Band...Mike & The Moonpies

Playing well over 200 shows a year, Mike and The Moonpies are one of the hardest working bands bands on the planet. Hailing from the "Live Music Capital Of The World" Austin, Texas, Mike and the Moonpies started as a dance hall band. Over the years, and 8 studio albums later, Mike and "The Pies" have established themselves as one of the very best Texas Country bands ever.

I got the chance to spend some time with the bands founder, singer-songwriter Mike Harmeier. We talked about the early days and what the bands been up to lately.

Ole School Red Dirt With The Red Dirt Rangers

Ground zero for Red Dirt Country music can be traced back to the home of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Stillwater Oklahoma. More specifically, a little two-story, five-bedroom house called "The Farm". The house was out on the edge of town and the home of one Bob Childers, the "Godfather" of Red Dirt. Some of the music founding members became who we know today as the Red Dirt Rangers.

The Rangers (John Cooper, Brad Piccolo and Ben Han) have been around since the 80s and among the founding members of Red Dirt County. I had the privilege to spend some time with these guys at The Born & Raised Festival. We talked a bit about how the guys got their start and what they've been up to lately. True I-Cons of the genre, the Red Dirt Rangers.

A Few Minutes With Texas Country Superstar Randy Rodgers

It's hard to not think The Randy Rodgers Band when you think about Texas Country. Hailing from San Marcos, Texas this band is the heart and soul of what's now called "Texas Country" music. From the bands live recording debut "Live at Cheatham Street Warehouse" to their latest, "Homecoming" the heart, soul, and style is unmistakable and that's why they are so loved by their fans.

At The Born & Raised Festival we got a few minutes to find out what Randy Rodgers and the band has been up to since we spoke at the festival a year ago. Of course there's "Hold My Beer Vol #3" with his ole buddy Wade Bowen, their latest tour, and much more. Check out our conversation and find the latest on The Randy Rodgers Band.

Tanner Usrey...His Stardom Just Keeps Growing!

Since we talked at last years at the Born & Raised Festival, Tanner Usrey has ascended to a whole other level. He's come a long way since his days growing up in the small town of Prosper, TX.  Inspired by the likes of George Strait, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Rolling Stones plus his favorite, Whiskey Myers, he combined all these influences to create his own style of singing and songwriting.  In 2019, he quit his "real job" and committed fulltime to his music career rolling out the Medicine Man EP, followed in 2021 by the SÕL Sessions EP, racking up tens of millions of streams. A spot on the Yellowstone Season 4 finale only brought more attention to his rising stardom.

His skills and growing fan base caught the attention of Atlantic Records Nashville. His latest release "Who I Am" marks the latest in a series of new releases, including "Last Goodbye" and this spring’s Atlantic label debut, "Give It Some Time".  I sat down with Tanner at The Born & Raised Festival where he caught us up on a busy year since we talked last.

A Few Minutes With The Amazing William Clark Green

No question that this years Born & Raised Festival had a stellar line-up of talent! One of the highlights was William Clark Green and his bands performance Saturday evening! From the little town of Flint, Texas, just south of Tyler, this Texas Country star already has six studio and two live albums to his credit. He attended college in the music hot-bed that is Lubbock and Texas Tech. It was there that he recorded his debut album in 2008.

Since then he's recorded gems like "Rose Queen" that includes the hit "She Likes The Beatles", albums "Ringling Road", "Herbert Island", and "Baker Hotel", and more! I was fortunate to spend a little time with this guy at this years Born & Raised Festival. We talked a little about music, Texas Tech, and one Patrick Mahomes.
